Why does Kinetic Light need to know my location?

It doesn’t. But it does need to access your photo library, which contains location information associated with your photos. When you first launch Kinetic Light your iPhone or iPod touch will ask you to grant Kinetic Light access to your location. You must answer Yes for Kinetic Light to work.

If you answer No, you can change your mind. Open the Settings App, select General>Location Services and set Location Services and Kinetic Light to ON. Kinetic Light will now have access to your photo library.

Unfortunately there’s no way around this. Be assured, Kinetic Light does not access your location, or any location information contained in your photographs and certainly does not share such information with anyone else.

Which iPhones and iPods can play back slideshows on my television / monitor / video projector?

Only the iPhone 4 and 4th generation iPod touch are capable of playing back slideshows on an external screen.

You’ll also need a suitable cable.

What cables do I need to play back slideshows on my television / monitor / video projector? And where do I get them from?

Apple provide a number of cables for connecting the most recent iPhones and iPod touches to external screens. These are:

  • Apple Composite AV Cable (MC748ZM/A)
  • Apple Component AV Cable (MC917ZM/A)
  • Apple VGA Adapter (MC552ZM/A)
  • Apple Digital AV Adapter (MD098ZM/A)

Third party cables may work, but we haven’t tested them.

The cables are available from the Apple Store and third party retailers.

Can I play back Kinetic Light slideshows on an Apple TV?

No. It would be cool, though, wouldn’t it?

Can I export my slideshows as movies?

Yes - if you have an iPhone 4 or iPod 4G, you can turn a slideshow into a movie. Tap the Make Movie button from the slideshow's front page to create a movie.

Can I include music and transitions in my movies?

Yes, your movies can include all the tranistions and text slides from your slideshows. They can also include the music from your slideshows' soundtracks, as long as the music tracks aren't protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM).

My movie has no sound. Why?

It's likely the music you've chosen is iTunes Protected Content. Some music you've bought from the iTunes store in the past may have been protected from copying by Digital Rights Management (DRM). Such tracks won't be exported. (Remember, you should always respect artist's copyright in any slideshow movies you share.)

I've made a movie, but not all my slides were included. Why?

For performance reasons, movies are limited to a maximum of 38 slides. If you attempt to make a movie from a longer slideshow, only the first 38 slides will be included.

How can I share my movies with my friends?

The easiest way to share your movies is to upload them to YouTube from the Photos app. (See the Make a Movie "How To" for details.)

You can also transfer your movies to your computer when you sync your iPhone or iPod touch.

What happens if I delete photos from my iPhone or iPod touch?
What happens if I remove photo albums when I sync with iTunes?

Version 1.2 and before...

The app doesn't make copies of the photos you use. It does this to avoid delay whilst importing and to avoid using up more space on your iPhone or iPod touch.

If you use the Photos App to delete a photo you’re using in one of your slideshows, it will no longer be available in your slideshow.

If your slideshows use photos from a particular photo album you sync from iTunes and you remove that album during an iTunes sync, any photos from that album will no longer be available to your slideshows.

In either case, instead of your photos you’ll see the Media Unavailable icon.

Version 1.2.1 and later...

The app now makes copies of all the photos you use in a slideshow. Deleting photos or removing photo albums won't affect slideshows in any version after 1.2.1.

What does “Media Unavailable” mean?

Before Version 1.2.1, the app didn't make copies of the photos you use in your slideshows. If these photos went missing - perhaps because you’d deleted them, or removed them during a sync operation with iTunes - the app would replace them with a Media Unavailable icon. After upgrading to version 1.2.1 you shouldn't see these icons anymore.

(If you’re seeing Media Unavailable icons for ALL your photos, check you haven’t switched off location services for Kinetic Light by mistake. See: All my photos have disappeared from all my slideshows. What gives?)

I can’t add photos to my slideshow. No photos appear in the photo picker.

Have you upgraded your iPhone or iPod touch to iOS 5? If so, first make sure you've updated to version 1.3. It's essential for all users of iOS 5.

Next check the obvious. Are there any photos in your camera roll or photo library? Open the Photos App. If it doesn’t contain any photos, you’ll either have to take some with the camera or sync some from iTunes.

If you can see Photos in the Photos App but they don’t show up in Kinetic Light, it’s likely that you’ve turned off access to Location Services for Kinetic Light. (As described above, Kinetic Light doesn’t access your location, but iOS won’t let it access your photo library unless you also grant it access to location information.)

Open the Settings App. Select General>Location Services and set Location Services and Kinetic Light to ON. Kinetic Light will now have access to your photo library.

No Instant Slideshows appear when I tap the Instant Slideshow button.

See previous answer.

All my photos have disappeared from all my slideshows. What gives?

Most likely, Location Services for Kinetic Light have been turned off.

Open the Settings App. Select General>Location Services and set Location Services and Kinetic Light to ON. Kinetic Light will now have access to your photo library and your photos should have returned. (For an explanation of why Kinetic Light needs access to location services see: Why does Kinetic Light need to know my location?)

If this doesn’t work, open the Photos App and check your photos are in the library. They may have been removed during your last sync with iTunes.
